3 Day Retreat
SINGING THE CHAKRAS - LIVING IN THE LIGHT
ONCE WE WERE ALL SINGERS
In ancient times,
when our mother the Earth was seen as sacred
and all who lived on her
walked gently and spoke softly,
we were all singers.
We sang to greet Grandmother Sun
and we sang songs of love to our sister the moon.
We sang in pure joy
at the sight of a baby dolphin playing with her brothers and sisters
and we sang in harmony with our sisters the birds.
We sang with power to aid a sister in birth
and we sang with gratitude
for a new little one as she took her first breath.
We sang to our crops
and gave thanks for the abundance bestowed upon us
with the sweetest tones of
contentment.
We gathered for the hard times
and mingled our voices with our tears
when one too young had passed over,
or a loved one had to leave us for a long period of time.
Once, long ago,
our voices healed
as we sang over a sick one to help the Spirit and the body to renew,
and we sang for the one who had lost her way
and wandered in confusion and anger.
Our voices soared free at the touch of a long awaited raindrop,
or the meeting of a new love.
We sang alone, our prayers of love and
gratitude
and we sang together in the Temple,
our joy at being one.
We are all singers,
it matters not how we sing,
just that we do.
Do you begin some days with a deep yearning?
Are you seeking something to ease the feeling of disconnection?
Have you ever asked yourself...what is my life about really?
You are not alone. Living in this culture, at this time, as a woman,
is not an easy task.
We are so dis-connected from the Great Mother, the great Creatrix, nature, and each other. This is all by design. The patriarchy cannot afford to lose the enormous store of energy which the female population of this planet represents. Woman, as powerful force in the universe , and the Earthly embodiment of the Goddess, is the best kept secret of this age. And all of us, at some level have taken this situation into our hearts and our beings.
We cannot help but be influenced by our environment, the daily assault of the media and pollution, the destruction of our natural environment, and the de-valuing of women’s lives. We see it all around us, everyday of our lives. Even the strongest among us is affected...and one of the most powerful ways of dealing with this alienation is to gather together as women and do spiritual work. Spiritual work, in a safe, natural environment, in love and trust of each other.
What are the chakras?
There are seven power centres in our bodies located approximately in the same areas as our endocrine systems. So for example the heart chakra corresponds to the area of the thymus and the third eye chakra to the area of the pituitary. These centres are represented in eastern teachings as spinning wheels of light and energy. So each chakra has a colour and a particular type of energy and resonates to a particular musical note.
In eastern traditions, the body is said to be a "body of light" and when all the chakras are in perfect alignment, the body of light visibly glows. I have taken this thinking further and associated a Goddess archetype (or feminine archetype based on Jungian thought) to each chakra. I have also written a chant to each Goddess associated with each chakra. Using the voice to tone and chant stimulates the chakras.
Many of us have begun, or have for many years, worked on our bodies in a variety of ways. We have given up harmful substances, we eat wholefood whenever possible, we limit the intake of preservatives, drink clean water and avoid red meat. We include exercise in our daily routine and make sure we have adequate rest. For many of us, it is a spiritual choice. For others it makes good sense and enhances the experience of our physical bodies. However, we can experience our bodies on many levels. Just as we experience life as physical, emotional and spiritual, so we can experience our bodies at those three levels and also many more.
Working with the chakras opens the way to working with our emotional and spiritual bodies. Doing this work in a group is the most powerful way of learning. It then becomes a simple and joyous experience to carry with us each day. It can even become our daily spiritual practice.
So, we will gather to share information, chant, play our drums, sing, meditate and do sacred work, to re-integrate our beings, clear out the hurt and disillusionment, let go of the false messages, dance out our aches and pains, eat beautiful healthy food, do sacred ritual to invoke the Goddess – within and without us. We will do this to literally save our lives.
We will do this by working with our chakra systems and our voices. We will use an ancient method of clearing our power centres and creating a balanced, clear pathway within us to channel universal energy and power. And at night we will do ritual under the moon and stars.

"Please accept my heart felt congratulations on a fantastic workshop. Your talent, hardwork, inspiration and devotion have created a wonderful experience for all to experience and enjoy. I believe it can be a life changing event if one is prepared to do the work and be present and engaged. Singing, sounds and vibrations are the building blocks of life itself. My belief is that we all need to make space in our lives for the divine to enter and your workshop does this wonderfully well. Not only providing space but giving tools for how to work with the divine in co-creating life how we really want it to be. Personally it has revitalised my spiritual life and given my physical life a much needed boost of energy. For me the vibrations created by singing your chants and songs makes powerful and enchanting magic.
I can find no area for complaint and will be recommending your workshops to my sisters. Well done and may you be as successful as you indeed deserve to be. Much love and blessed be.
KATHERINE BUCHANNAN'S OPEN LETTER TO ME AFTER THE LAST RETREAT
After attending a most spiritually uplifting and empowering women's retreat I am compelled to put pen to paper, or at least fingers to keyboard!
Firstly, I would like to thank Anique and Debbie for opening their home for the first retreat to be held at Serenity. Thank you both!
Serenity provides everything her name promises - she is a place of healing, meditation and contemplation, of safety and compassion, and home of the Goddess. Serenity is truly a place between the worlds!
We arrived at dusk after almost nine hours on the road. A mother and daughter anticipating a wonderful weekend, and unsure of what to expect. We decided to have no expectations - simply to be there and be present, to see what the Great Mother had in store for us.
Anique greeted us warmly and with open arms, guiding us through her home. Some of the other women had already arrived, and campsites were in various stages of creation. Site selected, tent erected, our sleeping space complete.
Dinner was a culinary masterpiece - all thanks to the chef! I hadn't realised how hungry we were. The meal was blessed within our circle, new Sisters linked by hands, establishing connections that would grow over the next two days.
The evening video provided insights into Goddess culture and religion through the ages, and stimulated lively discussion late into the evening. The long day caught up with us and we retired for the night.
Early morning brought birdsong and hot coffee! And the opportunity to share in Anique's morning spiritual practice. Learning the first chants of the day, our voices changed and blended, rising above us to create a web of prayer to the Great Mother.
Then Anique began to introduce us to the chakras, tones, chants and Goddesses. Spiritual practices that support our daily lives - discovering that, although we each have challenges, when we call on the Goddess for help and support, She is there, and She is within us.
The day was spent sharing and learning, each taking turns as student and teacher, and practicing the new skills gathered during the workshops. After lunch Sue Gee shared her amazing music, bringing tears of both laughter and emotion to our eyes and hearts.
Thankyou Sue - you have such talent, and your CD is great!
After the last workshop for the day out came the drums, rattles, castanets, all kinds of music-makers. We drummed, and chanted, and rattled, and rang - 21 women working up a sweat raising energy!! I know I'll be searching out a local drumming circle to join!
Another long day, another superb evening meal, and the opportunity to talk about the day, and learn more about our Sisters. The second video of the weekend introduced me to the work of Maria Gumbatas, and her research into Goddess cultures. We talked late into the evening, and headed off to bed not long before midnight.
The arrival of Sunday morning, the final day, meant that the retreat was almost over! As we joined the morning chants the words were so much more familiar, and I felt as though the Sisters' voices lifted me into the web of prayer being woven above us. Our words and spirits filled the Temple, and filled our hearts. What an empowering way to start the day!
Anique continued her teachings. We listened and learned, sang and shared. We gave life to the music in our hearts as we sang words from our journals, the words themselves becoming living music from our souls.
Anger, and hurt, and fear were spoken and wept. Release and sharing became the first steps to healing. Tears, pure and open, cleansing and healing wounded spirits.
The closing ceremony, sealed with the final chants and song, brought me both sorrow and joy.
Sorrow in leaving the sacred space between the worlds, sorrow in leaving Serenity, and sorrow at such a short time to gather with my Sisters. Joy in having been part of such an uplifting, affirming and empowering weekend. Joy in having been present; joy in being given the opportunity to meet 20 such powerful and spiritual women.
I am grateful to Anique for living her dream and finding Serenity, for creating and sharing her sacred space, and for the honour of sharing her knowledge and wisdom with me.
Anique, you have provided the tools and opened the doorway - now all I have to do is step through!
Bright Blessings, and many thanks
Katherine
